During the Second World War Kolobrzeg played the role of a fortress town. It was one of the strongest elements of the so called Pomeranian Wall - a long line of extremely powerful fortifications built by the Nazis in West Pomerania. After heavy fighting on March 18th 1945 the town was liberated. It was the first Polish seaport liberated in the war, so on that day a symbolic ceremony of matrimony took place between Poland and the sea.
